RowcroftRowcroft Hospice use Skyguard’s MySOS Personal Alarms to Protect Outreach Teams

Every year, Rowcroft Hospice helps over 2,000 people living with life-limiting illnesses to make the most of every day. Through time, compassion, and medical expertise, the Hospice provides comfort and support for patients and their families in their homes, in the community and at the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit.

With 3 in every 4 patients treated in their own homes, staff at the Hospice sometimes find themselves working alone in the community. By its very nature, working alone makes it harder for them to call for help should they face an emergency. Valuing their Duty of Care towards employees, Rowcroft Hospice chose to implement Skyguard’s personal safety alarms to mitigate the potential risks.

The previous system the Hospice had in place to protect their lone workers had become ineffective and needed upgrading. Tracy Allcorn, HR Officer for the Hospice explained, “Staff found the previous system we used cumbersome and complicated so we sought a better solution for their safety.” Looking to protect the Community Team, Hospice at Home Team, and all other lone workers with a more robust system, the charity turned to Skyguard.

Following a one-month trial period of Skyguard’s personal alarms, the Hospice were delighted with the service they received. The switch over from their previous system to the MySOS device brought with it a huge number of benefits;

As a result, more staff at the Hospice are willing to use it and are therefore protected. “Compared to our previous devices, the MySOS is far less complicated to use meaning the compliance of staff has increased dramatically. Our staff are now better protected whilst doing their jobs in the community.” Upon raising an alarm, users have the ability to speak with trained Controllers at the Incident Management Centre (IMC), via built-in two-way audio. This aspect is often highly valued by employees as it demonstrates that they are never truly alone when carrying the alarm, as Tracy continued, “Our staff particularly like the fact they can speak to an operative through the device should they need to.”

With shifts often lasting up to 11 hours, the MySOS device is the perfect solution for Hospice at Home carers. Backup and assistance is available on a 24 hour basis and, depending on the features used, the device can hold up to 100 hours’ battery life. The Hospice can rest assured that should staff require assistance outside of typical working hours, it is readily available.

As with every Skyguard customer, the Hospice has access to an online portal where they can manage each of their MySOS devices. This involves inputting tailored emergency procedures such as medical conditions of the user, and assigning the devices to members of staff – particularly useful for the Hospice as Tracy explains; “Managing the allocation of devices via the online portal means that we can keep a couple of spares in the office for any other members of staff, such as fundraising who may face situations where they could be lone working.” At the click of a mouse, alarms can be assigned to different users via the portal, allowing allocation on a short term basis.

By selecting to have a roaming SIM card fitted in to the devices, the hospice can utilise the strongest signal from any of the 4 major UK mobile networks, significantly reducing the chance of signal loss, “The fact that we can have roaming SIM cards is advantageous as we operate throughout South Devon which has many phone signal black spots.” Added Tracy.

Along with the physical elements of the device, the Hospice are more than impressed by the service they receive from their Account Manager and aftercare team.
“From the initial consultation with reps and the trial period, to finalising the contracts, delivery and roll out of the devices, I have found the process easy and the staff always helpful, friendly and courteous.” When asked as to whether or not the Hospice would recommend Skyguard’s personal safety service, Tracy concluded, “I would recommend Skyguard in clinical environments as the device is smaller than others on the market. Skyguard also provide devices for a trial period which allows organisations to truly find out if their products will suit their needs.”
