Survey Reports 70% of NHS Assistants Face Violence in the Workplace

A recent survey by UNISON has revealed some shocking statistics concerning the welfare of Healthcare Assistants in the NHS.

The survey shows that more than 70% in the sector had been the victim of aggression and violence in the workplace. Of this statistic, one in five of those had been assaulted and required medical assistance.

Many of the 1,200 staff surveyed thought that staffing levels have become insufficient as a result of Government spending cuts. 40% also thought of leaving the NHS over the past year – although it’s not clear if this is a direct result of facing violence.

Commenting on the survey results, Christina McAnea, UNISON Head of Health, said:

“This survey illustrates the sometimes grim reality for healthcare assistants and assistant practitioners, whose already challenging job is made harder by inadequate staffing and the threat of aggression and violence.”

Skyguard Launches Lone Worker Personal Safety Application for Android Smartphones

Skyguard have just launched an Android version of our popular mobile phone software solution – an instant downloadable application which transforms smartphones into fully functioning personal safety alarms.

The Android app allows users to raise an alarm at the touch of a button, wherever… whenever, without the need to carry a dedicated personal safety device.

Simply by pressing a single button on the user’s mobile or activating the touch screen, the software will send their GPS location and identity, as well as making a voice call, to our UK based, 24/7 manned Incident Management Centre (IMC). Action will be taken within seconds by Controllers to assess the incident and follow the user’s bespoke emergency procedures.

Skyguard’s CEO, James Murray said, “With the success of our BlackBerry software solution coupled with the

Is it Enough to Provide a Lone Worker with a Mobile Phone?

It’s a good question. Can businesses providing lone working employees with just a mobile phone be compliant with their Duty of Care? Well… it depends.

The past couple of years have seen changes to health and safety legislation with regards to lone workers. Companies and their directors can be prosecuted under the new Corporate Manslaughter Act as well as the recent introduction of the HSE’s Fee for Intervention – a cost recovery scheme making organisations liable for HSE-related costs for accident investigation, inspection and enforcement actions.

In the worst case scenario of a lone worker suffering injury or even death without having appropriate risk-reduction measures in place, it’s highly likely that their employers will face prosecution, leading to crippling costs, fines and a tarnishing of reputations.

Measures are in place to help mitigate risk. Solutions that are accredited to BS 8484
